Description
1854-O Half Eagle, AU58
Partially Lustrous Fields
1854-O $5 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. This New Orleans half
eagle issue circulated heavily in the South prior to the secession
of the states and the outbreak of the Civil War. Survivors from the
46,000-coin mintage are scarce and mostly dispersed throughout the
XF and AU grades, becoming particularly elusive at the near-Mint
level; Uncirculated pieces are genuine rarities. This
representative displays original, frosty surfaces with hints of
luster throughout the green-gold patina. Minor striking softness
occurs on the reverse shield and fletchings, but actual wear is
trivial at best. Population: 11 in 58, 11 finer (9/15).(Registry values: P6)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UM, PCGS# 8259, Greysheet# 9011)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
