Description
Well Struck 1855-C Half Eagle AU50
1855-C $5 AU50 PCGS. Variety 23-J. This C-mint Half Eagle owes its rarity to a limited original mintage of 39,789 pieces and heavy attrition during the turbulent Civil War years. This still-lustrous example is better defined than the typical 1855-C and shows numerous light abrasions in the fields. On the reverse, there is a prominent die cud between 3 and 4 o'clock. Winter says he has seen at least two pieces that had this cud, perhaps enhancing this piece's collectibility. Population: 20 in 50, 24 finer (11/04).From The Cincinnati Collection.(#8262)(Registry values: P4)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UR, PCGS# 8262, Greysheet# 9013)
