Description
Broken Die 1855-C Five, MS61
1855-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 23-I. In spite of a substantial mintage of 39,789 pieces, the 1855-C is seldom located in AU or Uncirculated grades. While this piece is labeled as a mint error, it is actually from the terminal state of the dies. A rim-to-rim die crack formed and the curved crack finally fell away from the die, leaving the blobby die break seen on this piece. Such pieces are rare. Winter stated he had seen at least two such coins. Otherwise, the surfaces are bright orange-gold with strong striking definition, as usually seen on this issue. From The Mississippi Collection.(Registry values: P4)
