Description

1855-C Half Eagle, MS61
Dramatic Reverse Cud at 3 o'Clock

1855-C $5 -- Reverse Die Break at 3 o'Clock -- MS61 NGC. Variety 1. A dramatic die break spans 2:30 to 3:30 on the reverse border and reaches the tops of the ME in AMERICA. The 1855-C is a relatively available issue and has only one known die pair, but the present terminal die state is very rare. Our online auction archives, which go back to 1993, have only two different examples that show this cud: a PCGS XF45 piece that appeared in January 2001, August 2006, and August 2007 Signature auctions and has two noticeable marks on the lower left obverse; and the present coin, pedigreed to the Pacific Coast Mint Error Collection and from our May 2007 St. Louis Central States Signature as lot 2795. The honey-gold surfaces are minimally abraded and better struck than is usual for the Charlotte facility.(Registry values: P4)
