Description

1855-C AU 58 PCGS. This second example does not have the Mint-made cud on the reverse as seen on the first. It is another high-end coin for the grade with bright, lustrous surfaces and a lack of marks. To the naked eye, the appearance resembles an Uncirculated piece as there is no real evidence of circulation.
This is a Condition Census coin that is mentioned in Doug Winter's book Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, 1838-1861. We are aware of at least three other AU 58 1855-C half eagles and they are all in tightly held private collections.
