Description

1855-D Large D Half Eagle
Mint State Sharpness

1855-D $5 Large D -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Variety 38-EE. Unnaturally bright but not hairlined from cleaning, this conditionally rare Dahlonega issue is seldom seen in Mint State. Given time and careful preservation, the coin might someday reacquire the semblance of natural patina. There are a few abrasions on the surfaces, where small digs near stars 2, 9, and 12 are the most noticeable marks. The eagle's head is characteristically weak, often seen devoid of feathers on this issue.
