Description

1855-D Liberty Head Half Eagle, XF45
Popular Large D Variety

1855-D $5 Large D XF45 NGC. Variety 32-AA, with the large mintmark. The mintage of Dahlonega half eagles was reduced to 22,432 pieces in 1855, and Doug Winter calls the issue "a scarce and underrated coin." Approximately 125-150 1855-D half eagles are known today, with perhaps 46-51 examples surviving in XF grades. The present coin is a pleasing specimen, with lightly abraded surfaces and slight, even wear. Census: 6 in 45, 53 finer (2/10).
