Description

1855-O Half Eagle, Well-Struck AU50
A Low-Mintage Issue, Elusive in All Grades

1855-O $5 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1. The only known variety. The 1855-O half eagle came from a low production of 11,100 pieces and has a low survival rate. Examples are elusive in all levels of preservation. PCGS and NGC combined have graded only 113 examples in all grades, a mere six of which are in mint condition, none finer than MS62.

The present AU offering displays orange- and yellow-gold surfaces that retain luster in the protected areas. The design elements are well-defined, including the curls around Liberty's face, the star centers, and the feathers on the eagle's legs, all areas that tend to be weak on many coins. The neck feathers are a tad soft as typically seen. Distributed minute marks are consistent with light circulation. Population: 10 in 50, 18 finer (7/14).(Registry values: P7)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UT, PCGS# 8264, Greysheet# 9016)
