Description

1855-O Five Dollar, Elusive MS61

1855-O $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 2, showing a thin and misshapen first vertical stripe in the first set, and a thin, broken second stripe in the second set. The 1855-O half eagle, struck to the extent of only 11,100 coins, is among the most elusive half eagles from New Orleans. The typical example is only XF to Choice XF; AU examples are uncommon, and a Mint State piece such as this MS61 NGC coin is quite rare. There is no perceptible wear, but the luster is thinned out in the fields on both sides. The strike is far bolder than usually seen, and scattered ticks are minor. Attractive apricot-gold color cedes to yellow-gold in the fields and the device high points. Both NGC and PCGS report two grading events each in MS61 with none finer at either service (7/16).
