Description

Elusive 1856 Liberty Five, MS62

1856 $5 MS62 NGC. The mintage of 197,990 coins hardly draws attention to the elusive nature of 1856 half eagles, especially in Mint State grades. NGC has only certified 38 examples of the date in all Mint State grades from MS60 to MS65. Compare those figures to a date such as 1854-D, with a mintage of only 56,413 coins, but a NGC Mint State total of 53 coins from MS60 to MS67, for just one example. There are a number of surprising rarities in the Liberty half eagle series. This wonderful specimen has brilliant orange-gold luster with excellent details, minimal surface marks, and remarkable eye appeal. Census: 8 in 62, 8 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P5)
