Description

1856 Liberty Half Eagle, MS64
Only One Finer Coin at PCGS

1856 $5 MS64 PCGS. The 1856 Liberty half eagle is much more difficult to locate than its substantial mintage of 197,990 pieces would suggest, especially in high grade. Mint State examples are as elusive as some of the sought-after contemporary issues from the Southern mints (Dahlonega and Charlotte) that garner the lion's share of customer attention in today's market. Heritage has not offered an MS64-graded specimen since 2002, and the finest-known MS65 NGC Milas coin was sold by Stack's in 1995 for $46,200.

The present coin is a delightful Choice specimen, with well-detailed design elements that exhibit especially sharp definition on the peripheral devices. The pleasing yellow and rose-gold surfaces display vibrant mint luster and only minor signs of contact. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P5)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UV, PCGS# 8266, Greysheet# 8902)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
