Description
Imposing Choice AU 1856-C Half Eagle
1856-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Winter 24-J, the only dies. Considerable prooflike luster outlines the devices and legends. Well struck for the Charlotte Mint, as the eagle's neck has only the slightest weakness of plumage detail. The eagle has faint clash marks (as made) above its right (facing) shoulder. The surfaces have attractive lemon-gold color, and are only lightly abraded for the grade. The 1856-C is a low mintage issue that has been consistently overlooked by collectors. Only 28,457 pieces were produced, and survivors in Choice AU and higher grades are rarely encountered. Population: 8 in 55, 9 finer (4/03).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UW, PCGS# 8267, Greysheet# 9018)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
