Description

Near-Mint 1856-C Half Eagle
Scarce, Underrated Issue

1856-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1. From a substantial mintage of 28,457 pieces, the 1856-C half eagle is considered a fairly common date by many collectors. Series specialists, like Doug Winter, realize the 1856-C is more difficult to locate than its mintage suggests. Only 150-200 survivors are known today in all grades, with the population of AU graded specimens numbering 35-45 pieces. Despite some weakness on the lower curl and stars, this specimen displays a sharper strike than usually seen on this issue. The surfaces are an attractive green-gold color, with no serious distractions. Population: 6 in 58, 7 finer (2/10).
