Description

1856-D Five Dollar, AU50
An Attractive Type Coin

1856-D $5 AU50 PCGS. Variety 33-BB. The only known variety of the year. In spite of a mintage of only 19,786 pieces, the 1856-D has become one of the more available D-mint fives. This is mostly the result of a hoard of higher grade (many Unc) pieces found in South Carolina. This example has slight rub over the high points, and those same high points are also softly defined, as often found. Rich orange-gold color covers both sides of this minimally abraded, late-date D-mint half eagle.(Registry values: P3)
