Near-Mint 1856-D Five-Dollar

1856-D AU 58 NGC. A very scarce D-mint five that has the lowest mintage of all half eagles from this mint from 1840 to 1855. Only 19,786 pieces were struck. Examples are very elusive in AU and Uncirculated condition. The surfaces of this piece are bright yellow-gold and the details are well brought up in the centers with the only softness noted on the peripheral stars. A series of horizontal marks are noted on the lower cheek and neck of Liberty, and there are several small alloy spots on the left side of the reverse.
