Description
Appealing 1856-O Half Eagle, AU53
1856-O $5 AU53 PCGS. CAC. The 1856-O half eagle, with a mintage of 10,000 pieces, is tied with the 1892-O for the lowest production total of any O-mint five. In fact, after the 1857-O half eagles, New Orleans would make no more half eagles for 35 years, until the 1892-O. The 1856-O is rare in About Uncirculated, and extremely rare in Mint State. This AU53 example boasts appealing orange-gold surfaces with a few light contact marks, although fewer than might be expected for the grade. The strike, as is typical for the issue, shows flatness on some of the stars around the periphery and at the bottom of the date. The reverse is choice for the grade. Population: 5 in 53, 10 finer (9/09).(Registry values: P7)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UY, PCGS# 8269, GSID# 9020)
