Description
1856-O Half Eagle, MS61, Tied For Second Finest Known
1856-O $5 MS61 NGC. When Winter wrote his reference on New Orleans gold in 1992, he stated that only one Uncirculated 1856-O Half Eagle was known. Since that time several have been discovered and certified, but today the number is still pitifully small with only four pieces certified by the two major services in MS61 or better grades. This piece is very well detailed with deep orange-gold coloration and semi-prooflike fields. Numerous small abrasions are scattered over each side, but the only one of any note is a small milling mark in the center of Liberty's cheek. From the Ashland City Collection.
