    1856-O Half Eagle, MS62
    The Sole Finest Graded

1856-O $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 2. The New Orleans Mint produced only 10,000 half eagles in 1856, making the 1856-O tied with the 1892-O for lowest mintage among O-mint half eagles. Mint State examples are seldom seen: PCGS reports one in MS60 and two in MS61, while NGC reports two each in MS60 and MS61; this MS62 NGC example is the sole finest example certified. The conditionally rare status of this issue is such that Eliasberg had to settle for an XF40 specimen (Bowers & Ruddy, 10/1982, lot 480), and Harry W. Bass, Jr. had an AU58 PCGS coin in his collection (Bowers & Merena, 10/1999, lot 1088).

Both sides of this coin display a lightly abraded surfaces consistent with the grade. There are no sizeable abrasions, giving this coin above-average eye appeal for the MS62 level of preservation. Modest prooflike tendencies appear in the fields, and the strike is bold everywhere except over stars 1 and 2 on the obverse and the eagle's neck feathers on the reverse. The color is a uniform orange-gold shade with tinges of olive patina.
