Description

1856-O $5 AU55 PCGS. The '56-O is an absolute as well as a condition rarity with a paltry mintage of only 10,000 pieces. With an estimated population of 55-60 coins, the 1856-O is equally as rare as the 1857-O and more difficult to locate than the 1855-O. The typical surviving '56-O half eagle grades VF with heavily abraded surfaces. This is one of the finer pieces known. The surfaces show minimal abrasions, except for a scrape across the lower portion of Liberty's face. Sharply struck, the coin has attractive reddish-orange and lilac toning.
