Description

Near-Mint 1856-S Half Eagle

1856-S $5 AU58 NGC. Large S. During its early years, San Francisco concentrated on double eagle production at the expense of smaller gold denominations. The 1856-S is rare at the near-Mint level and only a handful of pieces are certified as Mint State. This crisply struck butter-gold example has plentiful luster and typically abraded fields. Census: 15 in 58, 7 finer (2/13).
