Description
Undisputed Finest 1856-S Liberty Half Eagle
1856-S MS 64 NGC. Upright 5, Large S. A truly remarkable, borderline gem example of this conditionally rare No Motto half eagle. Everything is top rate here. The pinpoint sharpness, scintillating luster, and warm golden-orange patina all complement the near blemish-free surfaces. In checking major half eagle collections sold over the past 15-20 years, the '56-S fives were invariably XF to AU quality. Certification data indicates that 10 Mint State examples have been graded, but we're betting on at least two or three resubmissions being included in that number. From this short list of Uncirculated pieces, only the present coin graded as high as MS 64, and, without any hesitation, we claim it to be the undisputed finest known 1856-S half eagle. Population: 1 in 64, none finer (12/98).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UZ, PCGS# 8270, Greysheet# 9021)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
