Description
Extremely Rare 1857 Five, MS64
1857 $5 MS64 PCGS. With a mintage of 98,188 coins, the 1857 will not be found on a list of major gold rarities. However, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth observe in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, that "the 1857 half eagle is underpriced in Mint State and should trade for much more than the common examples of the type." NGC and PCGS, combined, have never graded a Gem example of the date, and they have only certified four Choice MS64 pieces, including this example. Both sides of this frosty Mint State piece have excellent surfaces with rich yellow-gold luster and subdued mint frost. The design motifs are sharply struck. Population: 3 in 64, 0 finer (11/09).(Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25V2, PCGS# 8271, Greysheet# 8903)
