Description
1857-C Half Eagle, MS61
Uncirculated Charlotte Type Coin
1857-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Mintages of half eagles at
Charlotte declined with the 1854 advent of the San Francisco Mint.
From the 1857 production of 31,360 pieces, the few hundred
survivors are mostly clustered in XF and AU grades. This
caramel-gold representative is Mint State and shows substantial
luster. The fields and portrait display marks consistent with the
MS61 level, though a horizontal depression on Liberty's chin
appears to be a lamination, as made. The strike is sharp for the
facility, save for occasional softness on the obverse dentils.
Census: 13 in 61 (1 in 61+), 9 finer (9/19).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25V3, PCGS# 8272, Greysheet# 9022)
Weight: 8.36 grams
