Description

1857-D Half Eagle, AU58
CAC-Approved Example of a Scarce Issue

1857-D $5 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Winter 41-HH. Light, white-gold surfaces are highlighted with overtones of steel-blue and russet-brown, with the latter especially present on the reverse. Light obverse abrasions exist, with a mark in the center of the cheek being the only one that is noticeable. Strike is exquisite for this issue, with at least some definition present in all strands of hair. Even more impressively, all wing feathers contain full detail, although there is some indistinctness on the neck. This is unusual for this issue, which typically exhibits significant weakness in the central areas of both sides.

The low mintage of only 17,046 coins suggests a scarce issue, which is borne out by the small surviving population of only 175 to 225 coins, according to Doug Winter. High grade examples are even scarcer, with most landing in the low end of the AU range. Narrowing the search to further to include only high-quality, CAC-approved coins significantly limits the selection once again, with only 7 approvals for AU58 coins, and just two in Mint State. Therefore, the collector of Southern gold who demands the best should capitalize on this rare opportunity to obtain a superlative example of this scarce issue.(Registry values: P3)
