Borderline Uncirculated 1857-D Five
1857-D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 34-CC. Mintages of half eagles at Dahlonega dropped annually between 1852 and 1859, since West Coast gold was increasingly struck in California, first at the Assay Office, and later at the fledgling San Francisco Mint. The 1857-D has an emission of only 17,046 pieces, and unblemished examples with noticeable luster are rarities. An above average strike, although the fletchings and forehead curls lack full detail.
