Description
Lower Condition Census 1857-D Half Eagle, MS61
1857-D $5 MS61 NGC. Medium Mintmark. Variety 34-CC. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The 1857-D is a scarce late date Dahlonega half eagle that is seldom located in mint condition. It is estimated that 120-130 examples are known today with around two dozen of these in AU and another five or six in Uncirculated. This piece is tied for fifth finest known with several other pieces at the MS61 grade level. This is a sharply defined example that has considerable reddish patina overlying the basic green-gold coloration. Lightly abraded with the most obvious mark located below Liberty's chin.
