Description

1857-D Half Eagle, MS61
No Noticeable Marks

1857-D $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 41-HH (formerly 34-CC). Struck several years past the early 1850s Dahlonega Mint peak production, the 1857-D five has a mintage of just 17,046 pieces. Most gradable survivors are in XF to AU grades. The present example lacks high point wear and is also surprisingly devoid of abrasions. The honey-gold surfaces are mildly bright and show only moderate incompleteness of strike, mostly on the fletchings and stars 10 and 11. There are no strike-throughs or other mint-made distractions. Census: 7 in 61, 5 finer (12/13).
