Description

1857-D Half Eagle, MS62
Rarely Seen Mint State Example

1857-D $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 42-HH. This desirable Dahlonega half eagle is well-struck for the issue, showing excellent peripheral detail and only modest weakness in the forehead hair curls and fletchings. Both sides have minimal abrasions for the grade, with none worthy of individual mention. The 1857-D is among the scarcer half eagles from this mint. There are 150 to 200 pieces known with most of these in the VF to XF range. It is doubtful if more than a few dozen examples survive in AU, and there are only a handful of Uncirculated coins. It will be a nearly impossible task to improve upon this example, especially given the enduring popularity of Dahlonega Mint coinage. Census: 3 in 62, 2 finer (7/16).
