Description

Scarce 1857-D Half Eagle, XF45

1857-D $5 XF45 NGC. CAC. Variety 34-CC, the only known dies for the year. The relatively low mintage of slightly over 17,000 pieces helps to account for the scarcity of this issue. Peach-gold surfaces are accented with greenish-gray and exhibit well defined design features, including the centers that are often weak. Only the arrow feathers are a tad soft. Often-seen laminations are visible on the upper left obverse rim.(Registry values: P3)
