Description
Rare Choice AU 1857-O Half Eagle
1857-O AU 55 PCGS. Bright prooflike surfaces show a number of small marks that are somewhat unfairly magnified by the depth of the reflectiveness in the fields. Well struck and lightly worn; a small mint-made planchet mark below ST in STATES serves as an identifier. The 1857-O is the most available of the trio of New Orleans half eagles struck from 1855 to 1857. Nevertheless, it is a rarity in properly graded About Uncirculated and we are aware of only two examples that grade Uncirculated.
From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection. Ex: Ed Milas Collection (Stack's, 5/95), lot 508, where it realized $7,150; Heck Dodson Collection (Mid-American, 5/92), lot 177, where it brought $9,075.
