Description

Rare MS61 1858 Half Eagle

1858 $5 MS61 PCGS. The devices are satiny, and the fields have a texture intermediate between satiny and prooflike. The obverse is partially brilliant with blushes of rich orange-gold. The reverse is mostly brilliant with blushes of orange-gold in the central area and tinges of blue and violet at the border. The strike is average with softness noted at the hair tresses by Liberty's forehead and by the eagle's claws. Two small planchet inclusions are noted on the obverse, one of which is at Liberty's temple. Only 15,136 half eagles were struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the year, and survivors are scarce in grades above XF, indeed when David Akers surveyed appearances of 1858 half eagles back in 1979, he was only able to account for 11 listings of Uncirculated examples in 337 major auction sales, a figure which may well have included duplicate appearances. Current price listings for the variety, don't seem to sufficiently acknowledge its rarity. Worth a generous bid from the alert specialist. Population: 2 in 61, 11 finer (8/05).(#8276) (Registry values: P5)
