Description

1858 Half Eagle, MS63
Rare No Motto Issue

1858 $5 MS63 NGC. Once the San Francisco Mint began operations in 1854, there was no need to transport gold to Philadelphia or the other distant mint facilities. In 1858, the Philadelphia Mint struck just 15,136 half eagles, for example. The mintage of smaller denomination gold coins was limited, even at the San Francisco Mint, as double eagles took precedence. This Select Mint State rarity has brilliant lemon-yellow luster with reflective fields. The strike is average, with some central weakness on both sides. Census: 2 in 63, 6 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P5)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25V7, PCGS# 8276, Greysheet# 8904)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
