Description

1858 Half Eagle, MS64+
Sole Finest at PCGS
Elusive in Any Mint State Grade

1858 $5 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. The Philadelphia Mint struck only 15,136 circulation strikes of the 1858 half eagle, starting a string of low-mintage issues (save for the 1860) that would last until well after the Civil War. The seldom-seen remainders of this issue usually appear in well-circulated grades; the average certified survivor, the top end of all coins, is an AU50 or Choice AU example. Mint State pieces are quite rare. This was a favorite date of Harry W. Bass, Jr., whose collection featured five examples.

The present MS64+ PCGS-certified coin shows many virtues including a bold, sharp strike throughout most of both sides -- minor softness is confined to Liberty's lowest hair lock on the obverse and the fletchings on the reverse -- and only trivial ticks appear amid copious luster. This example is the sole finest graded at PCGS, although NGC reports three finer. Population: 7 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (1/16).(Registry values: P5)
