Description

1858-C MS 61 PCGS. Very well struck with undisturbed, soft, frosty luster beneath pleasing medium yellow-gold and orange color. Unlike most example of this date, the reverse shows no Mint-made roughness in the fields around the eagle.
While more available in high grades than most half eagles from Charlotte, the 1858-C is still a very rare coin. There are an estimated 8 or 9 specimens believed to exist in Mint State, with none of these qualifying as Choice. The example from the North Georgia Collection is clearly in the Condition Census and it rivals the 1998 ANA: 7655 coin (graded MS 62 by NGC) as the finest example of this date that we have sold.
