Description

1858-D Half Eagle, Bold AU55

1858-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 43-HH, showing the upright of the D mintmark over the juncture of VE in FIVE. Deep amber-gold patina and minimal, grade-consistent marks and wear are hallmarks of this attractive Choice AU 1858-D half eagle, among the nicer survivors of the original production of 15,362 pieces. This piece shows good production qualities that could well be taken for a P-mint of the same era, except for minor strike weakness on the lower reverse, on the claws and eagle's legs. An elusive date in finer grades. Census: 21 in 55, 52 finer (5/15).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25V9, PCGS# 8278, Greysheet# 9027)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
