Description
Near-Mint 1858-D Half Eagle
Challenging Late Date
1858-D $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 35-DD. Although still
challenging, the 1858-D half eagle is more available in high grades
than its mintage of 15,362 pieces would lead one to expect. The
total number of known examples is in the 125-150 range, with about
three dozen specimens that would grade AU. The present coin is a
particularly attractive example, with only slight traces of wear on
the high points of the design. Sharply struck for this issue, the
centers show the softness always seen on this date. The surfaces
retain much original mint luster. Census: 37 in 58, 11 finer
(2/10).From The Lucy Llewellyn Collection of Southern Gold.(Registry values: P3)
