Description

1858-D Half Eagle, Exceptional AU58
Conditionally Scarce in This Grade

1858-D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 43-HH. This variety is attributed by the placement of the upright of the D mintmark over VE of FIVE. Several factors make this scarce near-Mint five dollar an exceptional find. First, its design elements are sharply struck, whereas most specimens are weak in the centers. Second, its orange-gold surfaces retain ample luster and are remarkably clean, revealing just a few unobtrusive, minuscule marks. This contrasts with Douglas Winter's (2013) observation that: "The 1858-D half eagle is difficult to locate with clean surfaces. Even higher grade examples show numerous abrasions." Finally, the current offering exhibits pleasing eye appeal, much better than seen on the typical example. This is an excellent choice for the collector of Dahlonega gold. Population: 24 in 58, 9 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P3)
