Description

1858-D Half Eagle, MS61
Challenging Later Issue

1858-D $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 43-HH. The mintmark is large with a wide opening and its upper right curve close to the olive stem. The 1858-D half eagle is a condition rarity in Mint State. This MS61 example is decently sharp at the hair just above the ear, though the temple area is soft and the rims beveled. On the reverse, the eagle is crisp everywhere but the arrow fletchings. Luster is pale canary-gold with a certain radiance. Wispy abrasions and a few small, scattered digs contribute to the grade. Census: 5 in 61, 4 finer (12/13).
