Description
1858-D Half Eagle, MS61
Just Outside the Condition Census
1858-D $5 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Variety 42-GG. The 1858-D is
usually only found in XF or AU grades. Uncirculated pieces are
seldom encountered. The mintage was only 15,362 pieces and it is
estimated that today between 200 and 250 individual coins are
extant. This piece is just outside the Condition Census, which
ranges from MS62 to MS65 (predictably the Duke's Creek coin). This
issue is known for problem-ridden surfaces, but that is not the
case here. Each side is remarkably clean and lustrous for the
grade, and the surfaces display original reddish tinted gold color
with a subtle mixture of lilac.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25V9, PCGS# 8278, Greysheet# 9027)
Weight: 8.36 grams
