Description

1858-D Half Eagle, MS61
Great Eye Appeal, Seldom Seen Finer

1858-D $5 MS61 PCGS. Variety 43-HH, identified by the upright of the D mintmark centered above VE in FIVE. This is simply a great-looking coin for the grade and issue, one showing far fewer marks than might be expected on well-struck orange-gold surfaces. It required a loupe to see the peppering of small marks that determine the grade, as the sole mentionable abrasion is a thin scrape underneath the eagle's left (facing) wing. Excellent eye appeal. The mintage was 15,000-plus pieces, but examples surpassing this one aesthetically or technically will be difficult to locate. Population: 8 in 61, 4 finer (1/15).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25V9, PCGS# 8278, Greysheet# 9027)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
