Description
1858-D Five Dollar, MS62+
Low-Mintage Dahlonega Issue
1858-D $5 MS62+ NGC. Variety 43-HH. By 1858, the Georgian
gold fields were largely played out, and West Coast bullion was
predominantly coined at San Francisco. Thus, the 1858-D half eagle
has a mintage of only 15,362 pieces. Most survivors are in VF to AU
grades. Mint State pieces are rarities, and subject to strong
demand from Southern gold collectors. The present sun-gold example
exhibits a sharp strike uncharacteristic of the remote and
underequipped Dahlonega facility. Luster dominates the borders and
devices, and none of the distributed small marks are of singular
significance.(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25V9, PCGS# 8278, Greysheet# 9027)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
