Description

1858-D Half Eagle, MS62
Conditionally Rare Issue

1858-D $5 MS62 PCGS. Variety 35-CC. The upright of the D mintmark is a bit further right than on the variety 35-DD, about centered over the juncture of the VE below. Only 15,362 examples of the 1858-D half eagle were minted, but the issue is conditionally rare, despite the existence of a few Mint State pieces. Doug Winter writes that the "1858-D is probably the most difficult of the late date half eagles to locate in very high grades." This piece boasts splendid golden-yellow surfaces with full luster and no trace of wear. The strike is quite sharp on all obverse peripheral elements including all star centrils and the date, and only minor softness shows on the highest points of the hair underneath ER of LIBERTY. The reverse shows minor weakness on the lower eagle details, but it is likewise sharp overall. The fields are bright and flashy, as often seen on high-grade D-mint fives. A couple of tiny ticks on the lower rear neck of Liberty, and one just under her nose, are pedigree markers rather than overt distractions. The combined NGC and PCGS populations show six submissions of the 1858-D in MS62 (including one MS62+ at NGC), with three numerically finer. Population: 2 in 62, 2 finer (2/12).(Registry values: P3)
