Description

Condition Rarity 1858-S Half Eagle, Near-Mint State

1858-S $5 AU58 NGC. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, state that the "1858-S half eagle is a major condition rarity. The date is currently unknown in Mint State." Since the 2006 release of their book, one coin has been certified above the AU58 level--a solitary MS61 piece graded by PCGS. The lone Uncirculated 1858-S was offered in our August 2008 ANA Signature Sale where it realized $28,877. How the only known Mint State example of a classic coin could sell for so little can only be explained by the lack of pressure from those collecting Liberty half eagles by date and mintmark. It would be an understatement to say that the 1858-S five dollar is an underrated issue. The day will come when collectors and investors alike will realize the importance of this date--of which only 88 examples have been graded by NGC and PCGS combined--and the prices of today will represent the missed opportunities of tomorrow. A few scattered ticks are observed in the right obverse field, as well as one abrasion below the mintmark. The strike of this peach-gold representative is crisp and the overall eye appeal is above average for the assigned grade. Census: 13 in 58, 0 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P8)
