Description

1859 Five Dollar, AU50
Exceptional Old-Time Patina

1859 $5 AU50 PCGS. While Charlotte and Dahlonega issues of the 1840s and 1850s get ample attention, many Philadelphia dates go underappreciated, despite being often scarcer than their branch mint counterparts. The 1859 is no exception: Only 16,734 pieces were struck, and any example is a scarce find. The current AU piece displays delightful old-time "crust" with deep orange-gold and amber-honey patina. Some struck-in die grease appears on the ME in AMERICA, and there are moderate field abrasions. Nonetheless, the coin is decidedly attractive.(Registry values: P6)
