Description

1859 Half Eagle, AU58
Rare Any Finer

1859 $5 AU58 PCGS. The scarcity of this Philadelphia half eagle belies its mintage, which at 16,734 pieces is not large, but about average for the period. Few Mint State coins are known, suggesting this lightly abraded AU58 example is a viable alternative. Yellow-gold surfaces retain mint luster at the margins, and abrasions are limited to light lines and some busyness in the fields. The coin is sharply struck on both sides. Population: 9 in 58, 2 finer (7/15).(Registry values: P6)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VB, PCGS# 8280, Greysheet# 8905)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
