Description

1859-C Liberty Half Eagle, AU55
Attractive Surfaces

1859-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. A substantial mintage of 31,847 half eagles was achieved by the Charlotte Mint in 1859. The surviving population is estimated to be in the range of 175-225 examples in all grades, with AU specimens numbering 35-44 pieces. A curious difficulty arises in grading 1859-C half eagles, as all examples seen are weakly detailed on the reverse. The cause of this anomaly has never been completely explained, but it undoubtedly results from some defect in the die. The present coin features a better-than-average strike for the issue and minimal abrasions for the grade. Census: 26 in 55, 44 finer (2/10).
