Description

Near-Mint 1859-C Half Eagle, Ex: North Georgia

1859-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Ex: North Georgia. Mostly lustrous with fairly deep orange-gold color. As on all known examples, the reverse shows considerable Mint-made roughness and appears weak. The 1859-C and 1860-C half eagles have very distinctive qualities of strike. While the obverse is sharp and appears "normal," the reverse is weak. The reason for this is probably due either to improper annealing of the die or that the die became clogged as it was being used.

Thanks to Heritage I realized a handsome profit for my coin submissions and intend to send most of the remainder of my collection to Heritage Auction Galleries for future auctions.
