Description
Important 1859-C Liberty Half Eagle, MS60
1859-C $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 27-M as always for this date. In 1859, the Charlotte Mint produced 31,847 half eagles, a rather substantial number for that facility. Typical survivors grade in the higher circulated grade range, XF to AU, but higher level AU coins and full Mint State examples like the present piece are elusive. In fact, NGC and PCGS have only certified 18 Mint State pieces, and that total includes resubmissions. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth record an average certified grade of only 50.6, and our own software calculates an average of 46.2. The present piece has a typical strike, weak on the reverse, with reflective fields and pleasing light honey surfaces. Both sides have a number of abrasions and other surface marks, but none of any significance. Census: 4 in 60, 9 finer (9/08).(Registry values: P4)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VC, PCGS# 8281, Greysheet# 9029)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
