Description

MS61 1859-C Half Eagle
With Semiprooflike Surfaces

1859-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Only a single die pairing is known for this later C-mint issue, despite the somewhat generous production--for the Charlotte Mint--of 31,847 coins. The combination of dies is curious, as while the obverse of this issue is generally well produced, the reverse is notoriously softly struck--the die that made the coins may have been annealed only a single time. The light striations visible in the fields of this Mint State piece impart a definite semiprooflike appearance, even through the consistent reddish-gold color. The obverse is typically sharply struck, while the reverse feather detail is weak, as usual. Two longish contact marks in the right obverse field serve as pedigree markers and help account for the grade. Only five coins are certified finer at NGC and PCGS combined. Census: 8 in 61, 2 finer (2/10).
