Description

1859-C Five Dollar, MS61+
Among the Few Finest Survivors

1859-C $5 MS61+ NGC. Winter-2. This is the rare second die pair missing from Doug Winter's 2008 reference, Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint 1838-1861. The date is further right than the usual Winter-1 variety and the knob of 9 is centered between dentils. Large openings in the 8 contrast with small openings seen on Winter-1. Regardless of variety, Mint State examples of the 1859-C are rare and this MS61+ example ranks among the top half-dozen pieces known. All 1859-C half eagles show a curious combination of dies with the obverse sharper than the reverse and multiple areas of die rust on the reverse. Weakness at the shield top and the eagle's neck is always seen, although it is less severe on this example. Striations from die polishing exist on the reverse. A few scattered abrasions do not compromise the high quality of this conditionally rare Charlotte five dollar gold. NGC Census: 9 in 61 (1 in 61+), 1 finer (5/25).(Registry values: P4)
